"Punch Line"

Released: N/A

"Punch Line" is one of Josef's early songs, first premiered in 2013 during his live shows. The song finds Josef surveying the ruins of a doomed romance, as he wanders the rooms of a flat that is now filled with only memories and ghosts. It starts on the piano and adds a pulsating beat after the second chorus. "Punch Line" was performed during Josef's previous tours and on various festivals during the summer. The demo version was first featured on the album sampler, and the song was slightly redone for the album.

Lyrics

I miss you more than I have so far, tonight
You weren’t joking when you said you’d left nothing behind
Now I’m wandering ‘round the flat and smoking where I like
It’s never been as empty as it is tonight
And it’s huge, now I’m alone between its walls
Hard to believe we used to think that it was too small

I did what I thought I had to
To protect you, did my best to
Keep my beasts at bay
Too late I realized it’s you who’d never played your whole hand in
No you delivered on my bluff
And ran straight back to him

Hard to believe
The joke was always on me
Your punchline was so low
You know just how to hit them home

I miss you more than I have so far, tonight
I can’t see an out ‘cause you’re fogging up my mind
It was far too hot to sleep so I took myself outside
To screw you out on a summer’s night
The odds were good but there’s no leaving you behind
So I learned patience and placed all my bets on time

I did what I thought I had to
To protect you, did my best to
Keep my beasts at bay
Too late I realized it’s you who’d never played your whole hand in
But you delivered on my bluff
And ran straight back to him

Hard to believe
The joke was always on me
Your punchline was so low
You know just how to hit them home
(You know just how to hit them home)

Oh what a mess I’m in
